In short
A time blocking app turns your task list into a timetable: you drag each task onto a timeline and give it a start and an end, so the day is decided before it starts. Most sync with your calendar. Chunk does it natively on macOS, from the menu bar, for a one-time price.
What is a time blocking app?
Time blocking is the practice of dividing your day into dedicated blocks, each assigned to a single task or focus. Instead of an endless to-do list, you decide when each thing happens. A time blocking app makes that fast: you drag tasks onto a timeline, see your whole day at a glance, and protect deep-focus time from everything else.
The apps differ less in what they do than in what they cost you and where they run. Some are web tools with a desktop wrapper, some are phone-first, and nearly all are subscriptions. Chunk is the outlier on both counts: native macOS, and a one-time purchase.
Your schedule slides in from the right of the screen and floats above every window — even fullscreen apps — so you never break flow to check what's next.
Connect Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Calendar. Move or resize an event in Chunk and it syncs back to the source — no double entry.
Build reusable template lists inside Tasks, then schedule them with daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly recurrence. Your structure is ready without a separate template mode.
Chunk is a one-time purchase, not a monthly subscription. Your licence is yours for life, and there's a 7-day free trial with no card required.
The tools people actually use for time blocking, side by side on platforms, price and what you get before paying. Every one of them except Chunk and Google Calendar bills monthly.

A quick side-by-side. We kept it honest — Chunk isn't the right fit for everyone, and that's fine.

FAQ
Common questions about time blocking apps, and how Chunk answers each one.
A time blocking app lets you give every task a slot on a timeline instead of leaving it on an open-ended list. You block the day out in advance, see the whole thing at a glance, and protect focused work from everything competing for it. Most sync with a calendar so blocks and meetings sit in one view.
A calendar app is built around what other people put in your day: meetings, appointments, invitations. A time blocking app is built around your own work, treating tasks as things you schedule, resize and move yourself. Chunk covers both in one timeline, because it syncs your existing calendars two ways rather than replacing them.
Yes. Google Calendar handles basic blocking for free, and Structured, Tiimo, FlowSavvy and TimeBloc all have free tiers with paid upgrades. Chunk has no free tier: you get 7 days free with no credit card, then it is a one-time purchase rather than a monthly subscription.
Most do, though often in one direction only, and Apple Calendar is usually the one left out. Chunk syncs two ways with Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Calendar: move or resize a block in Chunk and the change goes back to the source calendar, and events from those calendars appear on your timeline automatically.
Many people who struggle with focus find time blocking helpful because it turns an abstract to-do list into a concrete, visible plan for the day. Chunk leans into that with fullscreen alerts, a live tray countdown, recurring tasks, and reusable template lists that remove daily setup. It's a planning tool, not medical advice.
Chunk runs natively on your Mac and works fully offline — your schedule is stored locally and there's no separate Chunk account to create. If you use more than one Mac, you can switch on cross-device sync, which keeps them in step privately through your own iCloud account rather than Chunk's servers. Calendar sync, separately, uses the calendar accounts you connect.
